To access Edinburgh Castle you'll need a ticket and you can book a general admission ticket which is £21.50 for adults with other options available.
I opted to take a guided tour which is £27.00 and lasts 30 to 45 minutes.
My Tips
Arrive early
The website recommends 15 minutes before which is maybe slightly early but I'd aim for that. You meet your guide just inside the castle to the right ( there are signs).
The tour starts on the scheduled time so the 15 min pre tour time is used to get your listening devices set up.
Be strategic with your tour time
You have to book a time slot and you can't enter the castle until 15 minutes before and there are benefits to booking early and later time slots.
Later Time Slots:
Less Crowds and Less Lines for the Honors of Scotland
Other museums on the complex close before your tour ends
Earlier:
More people in the complex
Plenty of time to access the other museums on site.
I booked a 3:30 tour which was great in that there were a lot less people in the complex which allowed me to get some pretty cool pictures and videos BUT i couldn't visit any of the 2 of the 3 additional museums on site because they had already closed. The Castle stays open later but two of the museums have shorter hours.
Be mindful of mobility
Castles are fortresses almost exclusively located on hill tops to provide tactical advantages. They are also old both of which lend themselves towards uneven hilly terrain. The Castle in Edinburg is no different. You'll climb uneven stairs, walk up hills, and over cobblestones so wear good shoes and keep your balance.
