The highline is one of my favorite places to take visitors in the city who aren't the biggest big city fans. Just under 1 and a half miles in length the High line was once an elevated train track transporting goods directly out of factories.
After falling into disrepair and being partially demolished in the 80s, the friends of the highline worked hard to campaign for the public park with phase 1 opening in 2009.
There are over 500 different species of plants and trees along the highline inspired by the fact the tracks grew wild for over 25 years. Each of the sections have plaques through out talking about the plants an their environment.
You'll also find a lot of the old rails woven through out the park most frequently converted to plant beds The rise in popularity lead to a rise in luxury real estate butting up against the high line. Mixed among the landscaping, city views, and informational plaques is different works of art including for now a GIANT pigeon. The Highline starts 3 blocks south of 14th street and runs all the way up to 30th street with a newly opened connector to Moynihan train hall. I personally love the hustle and bustle of big city's but I love quite spots of nature within them even more.
