Opened in 1976 as a temporary exhibit, the New York Transit Museum proved so popular with visitors its been open ever since. Located in the old Court Street Subway Station, the upstairs covers the construction of the Subway, the innovations and engineering that run the Subway, historic turnstiles, and design elements.
The Middle gallery features vintage cartoons from the Subway Sun advertising local attractions and guiding riders on the proper behavior for the Subway. The back room upstairs focuses on the evolution of the MTA bus system with different buses visitors can sit in, historic horse and trolley car models and more.
Downstairs is over 20 vintage train cars with some as old as the early 1900s. Typically with artifacts that old you can only look from a far but every one of the vintage cars is open for guests to wander around inside. Its interesting to see the car designs change over time. Each of the cars also has advertisements of the time which are a hoot to look at.
They offer a free highlights tour on Saturdays at 1:15
